*Grand Mother's "(aka Alice K. Brown) Date filled Cookies (she always made for Christmas boxes)Notes: c = cup, t = teaspoon, T = tablespoon 1 c. white sugar 1 c. brown sugar 2 eggs 1 c. shortening 3-1/2 c. sifted flour 1 t. soda 1 t. vanilla 1/2 t. salt Mix together and roll out to 1/2" thick Spread on filling: Filling: 1 lb cut dates (2-1/2 c.) 1 c. chopped walnuts or pecans 1/2 c. water 1/2 c. sugar Combine and cook until thick. Set aside to cool. Then spread on dough. Roll up like cinnamon rolls (or jelly roll) and set in ice box overnight, or 2 hours (or put into freezer and cook later) Slice thin (about 1/8” thick) Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
